Virtual Worlds of Remembrance – Encounters, Remembrance and Digital Creation with VR and Podcasts in Dialogue with Descendants of Those Persecuted under National Socialism

How can history be conveyed in a way that creates an emotional connection, encourages reflection and establishes links to the present?

In this project, young people in Cologne and Berlin are developing immersive VR remembrance spaces and podcast episodes together with descendants of those persecuted under National Socialism. The project is based on personal encounters and biographical interviews. The stories are combined with historical sources such as photographs, documents, diaries and archival materials and transformed into digital spaces for immersive experiences.

The participants explore the mechanisms of exclusion, disenfranchisement and violence under National Socialism while also examining their impact to this day. How is the concept of the enemy constructed? What role do state institutions and society’s failure to intervene play? And how do memories and trauma continue to affect generations?

Do you work with a youth group, school, memorial site or educational institution? We would be happy to discuss potential collaborations and welcome enquiries from Cologne and Berlin.

We regularly report on the progress of the project, the workshops and the VR remembrance spaces being created on our website and our social media channels.
